B1A4 (Korean: 비원에이포) is a South Korean idol group based on Seoul, formed and managed by the agency WM Entertainment. The group is a male quintet consisting of their leader Jinyoung, rapper BARO, main vocal Sandeul, vocal and sub-rapper CNU, and youngest Gongchan. They made their debut in 2011 with the release of their debut EP “Let’s Fly” which contained their debut single “OK” a rock and electronic infused pop track. They are known for their “saessak-chum” or the “sprout dance” that members BARO and Sandeul performed on their guesting on “Quiz to Change the World”. They were first introduced to the public through a “webtoon” or comic. They have released a studio album, 2 EPs and various singles in Korea. [1]
The group began their foray into the Japanese market late 2011 with a showcase and in 2012, they released their first compilation album that consisted of all the tracks from their first two EPs Let’s Fly and It B1A4. The group released remakes of two Korean singles namely “Beautiful Target” and “Sleep Well, Good Night” as Japanese singles on June and August respectively, both peaking at number four on the Oricon weekly singles chart. Their debut Japanese album 1 was released in October 2012.
Etymology
The group’s name, B1A4, has a connection with the members’ blood types being A and B respectively. Members Jinyoung, CNU, Sandeul and Gongchan are type A and member Baro is a type B, hence the numbers 1 and 4 which is why the name of the group is “B1A4”. “Be the one, all for one.” is another explanation concerning the group’s name meaning that they’ll do their best as what everyone expects them to. [3] [4][5]
The group has been dubbed several nicknames, one of which was “countryside-dols” (countryside idols).[6] The Korean media often uses this nickname due to the fact that all of the members of B1A4 are from the countryside namely Jinyoung is from Chungju, Chungcheongbuk-do; CNU from Cheongju, Chungcheongbuk-do; Sandeul from Busan, Baro from Kwangju, Jeollanam-do; Gongchan from Suncheon, Jeollanam-do.[6] They were also referred to as “blood-dols” (blood idols) mainly because of the members blood types playing a major role on team’s name and identity and “paper-dols” (paper idols) because the of the paper classification “A4”. As an effort to distinguish themselves, B1A4 had also promoted a nickname “saessakdol” (새싹돌, “sprout-dol”) and created a so-called “saessakchum” (새싹춤, “sprout move”), which was showcased in various shows including Quiz to Change the World.
B1A4 fans are called BANA. To celebrate their 100th day on July 31, B1A4’s leader Jinyoung reveals that the boys had come up with a name for their fans. His explanation went as follows: “BANA (바나)” refers to “BA (Us, B1A4) NA (Our fans!)”, and put together it means “we have fallen for each other (BANADA)!”
Pre-Debut
Baro, the rapper of the group, was first discovered by a company representative who came across his photo posted on his friend’s homepage on social network service Cyworld. At his audition, Baro sang Sumi Jo’s “Once I Leave” and Sung Si-kyung’s “The Road to Me”, in addition to rapping and beatboxing.[1] Similarly, leader Jin-young was discovered from a photo posted on Cyworld. In contrast to Baro, Jin-young acted as the character Gong-gil from the movie King and the Clown.[1] He received training for composing, singing, and acting.[2] Gongchan was also discovered on Cyworld as a result of his winning of an “Eoljjang Challenge” when he was in middle school. He was also a runner-up of a cross-dressing contest while, where he danced to a song by soloist Ivy. Main vocalist Sandeul, who competed in numerous singing contests, was approached by a company agent after performing a song by Kim Yeon-woo in a talent show. Prior to their debut, the group underwent a training period of two years.[1]
The group’s name stands for the members’ blood types. Members Jin-young, CNU, Sandeul, and Gongchan are blood type A, while Baro has blood type B. In addition, B1A4 stands for “Be the one, all for one“. The members explained that the name “basically means ‘let’s do our best as everyone expects us to’”.[3]
2011: Let’s Fly and it B1A4On April 11, 2011, the members of B1A4 were introduced through a webtoon.
